Overview: big nose

The nose is a very prominent feature of the face and enables you to breath in oxygen, without needing to open your mouth, and smell things. It comes in all different shapes and sizes and, if not proportioned with the rest of the face, can make some of you feel uncomfortable.

Having a big nose can make some people feel particularly self-conscious, especially when meeting someone for the first time. You may notice when interacting with new people that you catch them staring, or double taking, which naturally makes you feel like you’re being judged.

Your friends and family, who appreciate you for who you are and not your facial features, may not judge you, but for a lot of people the real difficulty of having a big nose is standing up in front of an audience or present information in front of a room full of strangers.

Why are some noses bigger than others?

Studies from the University College London have identified distinct genes that determine the width and pointiness of this facial feature. This mean that everything from the size of nostrils to the width of bridge are all coded in your DNA, so to a certain extent predetermined in the genome.

Of course, environmental factors can also have an effect. A broken nose can change the shape and proportion of the face making it seem bigger than it is.

Genetics, again, is though to be a significant component in determining how facial features look. A person’s ethnic background can indicate, to a certain degree, the characteristics of features, including the shape and size of the nose.

What is the solutions for a big nose

There are a lot of people who choose not to do anything as they’ve come to accept it, in other words they have become comfortable with it.

If you’re someone that isn’t comfortable with having a big nose because you feel it seriously affects the way you look and feel, the only real option available is surgery. Rhinoplasty is a very popular cosmetic procedure carried out in the UK which can reproportion the nose to look aesthetically more pleasing.

Things to consider before nose surgery?

Having any form of cosmetic surgery is a big decision and needs a lot of careful thought and consideration, especially when it results in significant change in your appearance and can’t be reversed.

It’s important to consider how necessary the procedure is for you and set expectations regarding what you want and whether it is achievable.
