Overview: Crow’s feet
“Crow’s feet” is a term commonly used to describe lines and wrinkles that develop in the corner of the eyes and is one of the first noticeable signs of aging. Aging is a natural process that everyone goes through, starting from the moment you’re born. As you get older some of your features, especially around the face, begins to change and the youthful look and feel start to deteriorate.
More specifically, you may notice more lines and wrinkles appear on your face and loose, drooping skin, around the eyes, brow, mouth and jaw. The lines that form in the corner of the eyes, also known as crow’s feet, generally start to appear when you reach your 30s and become more prominent later in life.
Crow’s feet can start to appear for a number of reasons. Firstly, crow’s feet are expression lines. They are folds that occur naturally as you move the area around your eye and use facial expressions. As you get older, however, the production of collagen starts to breakdown which means the skin gets thinner, drier, and less elastic, and less able to protect itself from damage. As the skin is no longer able to maintain is original form, the lines become a permanent facial feature.
Can crow’s feet be prevented?
It’s not possible to avoid the signs of aging however there are things that can be done to prolong or maintain a youthful look for longer. There are many over the counter anti-wrinkle and skin rejuvenation creams available that may help reenergise the skin and keep it looking young and healthy.
Alternatively, there are many surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments that can be carried out to remove crow’s feel. This is particularly useful for older people who already have deep lines and wrinkles around the face that can’t be treated with over the counter solutions.

Treatments for crow’s feet
Brow lift – Brow lift surgery is carried out to reduce the signs of aging. Over time the brow can drop, making the face look tired and old. By lifting the area above the eye, it is possible to gives the impression of a more youthful face.
A brow lift works by tightening the skin and muscle around the forehead to enhance the appearance of the area around the upper eye lids, forehead and eye brows.
Face lift – Also known as Rhytidectomy, is surgical procedure designed to reverse the early signs of aging by removing loose skin that has lost its elasticity, specifically focusing around the eyes, mouth and jaw.
It’s ideal for treating loose skin around the eyes, sagging skin around the face and neck and deep lines and wrinkles.
Dermal fillers – The aging process will change your skin and facial features. You will notice deeper lines and wrinkles developing or your cheeks beginning to sink. Dermal fillers are chemical injections used to smooth out wrinkles and creases in the skin. They can also be used to add definition to facial features like lips and cheeks, to make them more prominent.
Facial peels – Is a chemical peel designed to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the face. Generally, facial peels are better suited for fair-skinned patients. If you have darker sink, you may also achieve good results but there is more risk of uneven skin tone.
Microdermabrasion – A safe, controlled, non-surgical cosmetic treatment that exfoliates the surface of the face. The procedure uses fine crystals and a vacuum to remove dead skin cells to rejuvenate the skin. Microdermabrasion is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and blemishes that develop on the skin as you age.
Skin rejuvenation – A laser treatment developed to remove layers of skin very precisely to allow new skin cells to grow back in its place. The new skin cells that form after the surface of the skin heals appear much tighter and more youthful than before.
