Breast enlargement explained
Breast enlargement or breast augmentation surgery (also known as boob job) is a very popular procedure in UK. It involves the insertion of implants under the breast tissue to increase the size and change the shape of the breast to make them look more even.
Like many surgical procedures, having breast enlargement surgery is a big decision and needs to be taken seriously. Weigh up the pros and cons to, firstly, be sure you want the procedure and, secondly, set some expectation for the potential outcome.
Breast enlargement surgery can be costly. Which is why it is so important to gather all the information you need to fully understand what you’re paying for and what you’ll get in return.
Working with a cosmetic surgeon you can mutually agree on how to move forward with the procedure. They can fill in any gaps and answer some of the questions on your mind, helping you to make the best decision.
Many hospitals and clinics will provide a free, no obligation, consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. During the consultation the surgeon appointed to you will conduct a physical assessment and discuss the options available to you based on your requirements.
Why have breast enlargement surgery?
Here are some reasons why people choose to have a breast enlargement surgery:
- Not happy with the size of the breasts
- Breast are not even or symmetrical
- Enhance the shape and feel.
- Reconstructive surgery
What does breast enlargement surgery involve?
Typically breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete.
The surgeon will usually make a small cut under the breast but can also make an incision under the arm or around the nipple. The surgeon should make it clear, before the surgery, where the cut will be made.
This will then be followed by making a pocket, either between the breast tissue and muscle or under the muscle, for the implant to be positioned. The exact positioning of the implant will be decided by the surgeon and based on your anatomy, looking at size and shape of the breast and the amount of loose skin.
After implant is positioned, the cut is stitched and dressing is applied to protect the area.
Once surgery is complete you may be asked to stay overnight and should be provided with pain relief medication.
What Types of breast implants are there?
The most common implant used in the UK is silicone gel, however saline implants are also available. Silicone gel implants are a silicone shells filled with plastic gel whereas saline are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water.
Both types of implant have some advantages and disadvantages, your surgeon should discuss with you before the procedure.
Few things to be aware of:
- Softer of the 2 types of gel
- More natural feel
- Less likely to wrinkle.
- If implant ruptures it could cause Siliconomas
- Rupture risk is reduced if cohesive implant is used, but the natural feel of the implant may be compromised.
- If implant ruptures the salt water solution will be safely passed out of the body.
- More likely to wrinkle
- Feels firmer and less natural than silicone gel
- More likely to deflate or rupture.
How long do implants last?
Breast implants will need to be replaced at some point. On average some women may need to replace their implants after 10 years. This could be because of some complication or issue with the implant or due to physical changes in the breast area over the period the implants are in place.
You should not go into this type of surgery expecting the results to be permanent.
After breast enlargement surgery and recovery
After breast enlargement surgery, you may be asked to wear a post-surgical bra up to three months after the procedure. This is to protect the treated area and start the healing process. You will need to rest at home for one or two weeks, after which you may return to work if you feel fit. Full recovery will take another four to six weeks.
Before returning home, you should be given guidance by the hospital on the best and most comfortable way to make a full recovery. If you experience any problems during the recovery period the hospital which performed your treatment should be available to you for additional support and care.
It is vital that, on your return home, you use your time to rest to ensure a speedy recovery. Avoid any strenuous activity or exercise, as advised by your surgeon, and make sure your scars are kept out of direct sunlight.
After a week or two your stitches should dissolve, or you may need to get them removed, depending on the type of stitches used. Within four to six weeks you should mostly be back to normal and your breast should start to feel more natural within a few months.
Risks and side effect of breast enlargement surgery
It’s very common to have the following side effect after your surgery:
- Pain around the treated area
- A feeling of tightness around the chest
Like a lot of surgical procedure breast enlargement surgery can occasionally result in complications or problems. These include:
- Thick scaring
- Ruptured implants – breast may feel tender to the touch and the implant will need to be removed
- Abnormal shape due to implant moving out of position
- Temporary or permanent nerve problem in the nipple, making them more or less sensitive.
- Not being able to breast feed or producing less milk than usual.
- Rippling of implant
If, after the procedure, you feel you have encountered a serious problem or the outcome is not what you were promised, and the results are not what you expected, reach out to your surgeon.
Contact the clinic that performed the procedure and explain the situation, especially if you’re experiencing discomfort or any unusual symptoms that were not explained to you during the consultation.
Things to consider before your procedure
Opting for any form of cosmetic surgery requires a lot of careful thought and consideration. You need to really understand the reasons for choosing the procedure you want and set realistic expectations of the outcome. As we’ve pointed out earlier, every surgery, big or small, contains some level of risk.
Once your mind is made up, are you confident that you are fully prepared for the treatment?
Here are some things you should think about:
- If you have children, do you need childcare?
- Do you have adequate space to recover?
- How long is the recovery time for your treatment?
- How long do you need to take off work?
- When will you start to see the results you expect?
- When will you fully recover and resume your usual activity?
- Are the results of the surgery permanent?
