Brow lift explained
Brow lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure carried to reduce the signs of aging. Over time the brow can drop, making the face look tired and older. By lifting the area above the eye it is possible to gives the impression of a more youthful face.
A brow lift works by tightening the skin and muscle around the forehead to enhance the appearance of the area around the forehead, upper eye lids and eye brows. Although it’s commonly used for aesthetic reasons, it can also be an effective treatment in some extreme cases where the brow and eyelids are affecting the persons vision.
Thousands of people choose to have brow lift surgery ever year in the UK, with positive results. If you’re being affected by drooping brows or are just uncomfortable with their appearance, brow lift surgery could be for you.
Why have brow lift surgery?
Brow lift surgery can open your face and give you a more youthful appearance. It can also alleviate some of the side effects of drooping brows.
Here are some benefits of brow lift surgery:
- Improved confidence
- Increased self-esteem
- Look rejuvenated
- Look more youthful
- Correct asymmetry.
Here are some common reasons for having brow lift surgery:
- drooping brows can make you look like you’re frowning or angry
- You have lines across your forehead and between your eyes
- Some women may find it difficult to apply makeup on the eyelid
When is the right time to consider brow lift surgery?
The right time to have surgery depends on when you feel ready, but to realistically consider brow lift surgery you should be noticing some of the following :
- Drooping or sagging eyebrows which make you look older and unapproachable
- You have excess skin and fatty tissue hanging below your brow, over your eyes
- You have frown lines
- You have deep creases across your forehead.
What does brow lift surgery involve?
There are three types of brow lift surgery. These include the open brow lift technique, the endoscopic brow lift technique and the limited incision technique. The type of brow lift you have will be chosen by your surgeon and is generally determined by your skin and facial features.
Brow lift surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic and can take up to two hours to complete. It involves making incisions in the scalp, forehead and/or upper eyelids.
Open brow lift
The surgeon will make a long incision from one ear to the other just below the hairline, or in one of the creases of the forehead, to hide the incision. Once the incision is made the surgeon will start to separate the skin from the top part of the face before loosening the muscles and removing excess fat and skin. The surgeon will then reduce and tighten the muscle, pull the remaining skin back in its place and stitch the brow back into position.
Endoscopic brow lift
This technique involves the surgeon making up to five small incisions across different parts of the scalp. An endoscope, which is a long plastic tube with a light and a camera attached, is passed through the incisions. Images from the camera are live streamed to the theatre where the surgeon can operate under the skin. This technique requires minimal incision, but may not be suitable for everyone.
Limited incision technique
Limited incision technique is a hybrid of the two techniques above. Minimal incisions are made, but there is no use of the endoscope for this procedure.
After brow lift surgery and recover
Immediately after your surgery you will experience swelling, which should go down after a day or two. Your surgeon may suggest using an ice pack to reduce the initial swelling.
For the first week it may be advised that you sleep on your back and keep your head elevated.
You may be called in for a check-up shortly after your procedure – your surgeon will advise on this.
There will be some tightness, pain and discomfort for which you should receive pain relief medication.
You may experience some temporary swelling and bruising around the area that was treated.
Your surgeon should advice you on how much time you may need to take off work, typically one or two weeks.
Avoid using any cosmetic products until fully recovered or advised by surgeon.
It is important to attend any follow up appointments to make sure your recovery is going as expected and the desired results are achieved.
What if there is a problem?
If, after the procedure, you feel you have encountered a serious problem or the outcome is not what you were promised, and the results are not what you expected, reach out to your surgeon.
Contact the clinic that performed the procedure and explain the situation, especially if you’re experiencing discomfort or any unusual symptoms that were not explained to you during the consultation.
Things to consider before your procedure
Deciding to have any form of cosmetic surgery requires a lot of careful thought and consideration. You need to really understand the reasons for choosing the procedure you want and set realistic expectations of the outcome.
Once your mind is made up, are you confident that you are fully prepared for the treatment?
Here are some things you should think about:
- How long is the recovery time for your treatment?
- How long do you need to take off work?
- When will you start to see the results you expect?
- When will you fully recover and resume your usual activity?
- Are the results of the surgery permanent?
