Neck lift explained
Neck lift surgery, also known as Platysmaplasty, is a popular cosmetic procedure carried out to remove wrinkles and tighten the skin and muscle around the neck, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
Aging is an inevitable part of life, but for some people the physical signs of aging, like wrinkles and loose skin, are difficult things to accept. There are many cosmetic procedures that have been designed to reverse signs of aging, neck lift surgery being one of the most popular. The procedure involves the removal and tightening of excess skin from the neck and jaw area.
Apart from being a procedure to rejuvenating aging features, neck lift surgery is available for people who have lost a significant amount of weight. One of the side effects of significant weight loss is the loosening of skin and muscle. Through neck lift surgery it is possible to restore the aesthetic form of the neck, resulting in a much firmer and tighter appearance.
Why have neck lift surgery?
Here are some benefits of neck lift surgery:
- Improve confidence and self-esteem
- Gain a more youthful appearance
- Wear close that you like without the worry to expose undesired features
- Feel emotionally rejuvenated.
Here are some reasons for having neck lift surgery:
- Excessive wrinkles and creases in the neck
- Excess fat and tissue build-up
- Appearing older than your years.
- Significant weight loss has resulted in loose and stretched skin and muscle
- The shape of your neck line has changed due to aging
- Skin has lost its youthfulness
- Skin has lost its elasticity and is beginning to sag.
What’s involved in neck lift surgery?
Neck lift surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be asleep through the procedure. The procedure will take two to three hours.
During the surgery a series of incision will be made under the chin and behind the ears to expose the neck muscles and stretch the loose skin along the jaw line and neck. The surgeon will make the required adjustments to the neck muscles and reposition the skin, tightening it along the neck, and remove the excess.
A facelift will require additional incision to be made around the hairline so any loose skin on or around the face can also be tightened.
Liposuction will require a small incision below the chin to remove excess fat.
After the surgery is completed, you will experience some swelling and bruising and be in some discomfort. The treated areas will be wrapped using a compression bandage.
Your surgeon will provide details on aftercare and recovery before the procedure.
After neck lift surgery and recovery
After neck lift surgery, you will go back to your room to rest and recover. Depending on your situation you may be asked to stay for one or two nights after the surgery.
Experiencing some pain, swelling and bruising after surgery is quite normal and will improve within a few weeks.
Your surgeon will prescribe any medication needed to relieve any post-surgery symptoms you’re experiencing. At home you may be advised to use an ice pack to help with swelling and bruising.
In the early stages of recovery, it is important to rest and refrain from any strenuous or sudden movement. This will allow the treated area to heal effectively and prevent unnecessary discomfort to you. Additionally, you may be advised to take two or three weeks off work.
Within four to six weeks you should be returning to normal activity and the full results of the procedure will become clear after about three to six months.
It’s extremely important that all follow-up appointments are attended so your surgeon can check on how your wounds are healing.
Side effects of neck lift surgery and complications
It’s common to experience some of the following effects after surgery:
- Neck and face area feeling stiff
- Swelling and bruising
- Some scarring that usually fade
Like all cosmetic procedure there are some risks associated with neck lift surgery.
- Haematoma under the skin
- Some loss of sensation
- Think scars
Details of risks and after surgery symptoms are will be discussed by your surgeon.
If, after the procedure, you feel you have encountered a serious problem or the outcome is not what you were promised, and the results are not what you expected, reach out to your surgeon.

Things to consider before your neck lift procedure
Choosing to have cosmetic surgery requires a lot of careful thought and consideration. You need to really understand the reasons for choosing the procedure you want and set realistic expectations of the outcome.
Once your mind is made up, are you confident that you are fully prepared for the treatment?
Here are some things you should think about:
- How long is the recovery time for your treatment?
- How long do you need to take off work?
- When will you start to see the results you expect?
- When will you fully recover and resume your usual activity?
- Are the results of the surgery permanent?
- What do you need to do to maintain the results of the procedure?
- If you have children, do you need childcare during recovery?

About Neck Lift Surgery
There are many cosmetic surgery procedures specifically designed to reverse the signs of aging. Neck lift surgery, also known as platysmaplasty, is one such procedure focusing specifically on the aesthetic form of the neck.
Some people develop excess, loose, skin around their neck, usually due to significant weight loss or aging. Skin that has stretched due to excessive weight or lost its elasticity because of aging cannot return to its natural youthful form. Neck lift surgery can be used to remove excess skin and tissue, tighten the muscles and reposition the remaining skin to give a much tighter look and feel.
