In addition to the top-quality facilities available to patients, medical travellers can access wellness services and hotel accommodation of the highest standard. Turkey is a secular, unitary, parliamentary republic. A large part of the country is in Anatolia, west Asia, with a smaller part located in the Balkan peninsula in the southeast of Europe. Bordering turkey are eight countries, Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
The capital of Turkey is Ankara which is in the heart of Anatolia. The best known and most populous city is Istanbul which has a population of 15 million and is the financial, cultural and historical centre of the country.
While Istanbul is a big tourist attraction all year round, during the summer periods the coastal regions of the Aegean and Mediterranean are very popular with both tourists and medical travellers.
Turkey healthcare system
Due to its close relations with the European Union and its desire to become a member, Turkey is implementing many of the European standards expected of healthcare institutions. Especially when it comes to standard of quality, care and technology.
Turkish Medical Association sets the local standards and guidelines that are followed by hospitals, healthcare facilities and medical practitioners.
Turkey has an estimated 1200 hospitals, 55% of which are own and operated by the state. The rest are either private, run by universities or foreign operations. Many private care providers are accredited internationally by the Joint Commissions International (JCI), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JACHO), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and have affiliations with Western medical groups.
English is widely spoken by medical staff, but interpreters will be available for medical travellers if needed. Medical staff are certified by the Turkish Medical Association and are usually members of organisation they specialise in like Turkish Dental Association, Turkish Gynaecologist & Obstetric Association, Turkish Orthopaedic and Traumatology Association, Turkish Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery Society, Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, and so on.
Travelling to Turkey for treatment
Most direct flights from the UK go to Istanbul. Depending on the time of year, more direct flights to different destinations like Izmir and Antalya may become available.
Typical flight time to turkey from the UK is 3.5 to 4 hours. The cost of a flight will vary depending on the time of year. There are many low-cost flight operators, as well as many bigger airlines that fly to Turkey which gives travellers plenty of travel options.
Last year over 1.7 million British nationals travelled to Turkey, most without any problems. If you need emergency assistance you may contact the nearest British embassy for support. If you’re a dual national, Turkish and British, the British embassy may only be able to offer limited support.
Be sure to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel. Although this type of insurance won’t help with the cost of your medical travel or any complications that may occur, it can be extremely useful when, and if, you’re confronted with and unexpected situation while out there.
